At Orchidale, Pancake Day is a celebration of tradition, teamwork, and tasty treats. Shrove Tuesday has been marked in Britain for centuries as the final day to use up luxury foods before Lent. Pancakes were the perfect solution — quick to make, filling, and a great way to clear the pantry.
Our Simple Orchidale Pancake Recipe
100g plain flour
2 eggs
300ml milk
A splash of oil for cooking
Mix the ingredients until silky smooth, ladle into a warm pan, cook until golden, flip, and serve with your favourite toppings.
Topping Ideas for Little Explorers
Children love customising their pancakes, and offering a colourful topping station makes the experience even more exciting.
Fruit slices such as bananas, strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries brighten the plate and add natural sweetness.
Yoghurt — plain or flavoured — gives a soft, creamy layer.
Honey or maple syrup can be added sparingly for a sweet touch (not suitable for under‑1s).
Nut butters like peanut or almond spread add richness and protein.
Sprinkles make pancakes feel like a celebration.
Cinnamon and sugar create a cosy, familiar flavour children adore.
Why Children Love This Activity
Cooking pancakes gives children a chance to learn in so many different ways. It’s a wonderful bonding activity, encouraging adults and children to work side by side, share responsibilities, and enjoy the results together.
There’s plenty of maths learning woven into the fun — measuring ingredients, counting eggs, talking about full and empty, and watching the clock while the pancake cooks.
Pancake making sparks conversation and decision‑making. Children can choose toppings, compare flavours, and explain their preferences.
It can even become a social celebration. Inviting grandparents, siblings, or friends to join in turns the activity into a warm, community‑building moment.
Additional developmental benefits include:
Fine Motor Skills strengthened through pouring, stirring, and sprinkling.
Language Skills as children learn new cooking vocabulary.
Social Skills through turn‑taking, sharing, and teamwork.
Keeping Everyone Safe
We ensure children stay at a safe distance from heat, use child‑friendly tools, and wash hands before and after cooking. Adults handle the hot surfaces while children enjoy the fun parts.
