Growing Confidently: 10 School Readiness Milestones for the Transition to School

As our children prepare to leave Orchidale, we focus on a holistic approach to school readiness. Here are the 10 milestones we recommend focusing on to help your child bloom:


  1. Managing Outwear 🧥

Teach your child the "flip trick" for their coat or how to tuck in their shirt. Being able to dress themselves after PE is a major milestone that teachers truly appreciate!


  1. Toileting Confidence 🚽

Full independence in the bathroom is essential. This includes being able to manage buttons or tights and understanding the hygiene routine of "flush, wash, dry."


  1. Eating Independently 🥤

Practise "picnic style" lunches at home. Let them practise peeling a banana or opening a yoghurt pot. These small wins build a sense of "I can do it!" before they enter the big hall.

  1. Turn-Taking & Kindness 🍭

School is all about community. Practising kindness and understanding that they can't always be first in line helps them integrate into their new peer group harmoniously.

  1. Listening to Cues 🔔

In a classroom, children need to respond to bells, claps, or verbal instructions. Practise giving your child "mission" style tasks at home to sharpen their active listening skills.


  1. Name Recognition 🖊️

Knowing what their written name looks like is a vital tool for the first week of school. It helps them find their seat, their coat peg, and their work folders without feeling lost.

  1. Pincer Grip Prep 🦀

Using tweezers to pick up pom-poms or drawing with chunky chalks helps develop the muscles needed for writing. Fine motor control is the foundation of every little artist’s journey.

  1. Expressing Feelings 💛

A school-ready child can tell a teacher if they are sad, happy, or frustrated. Using "feeling words" at home helps them navigate the emotional landscape of a new school.


  1. Emotional Readiness ⚓

Build a routine for drop-offs. A consistent, positive goodbye routine helps children feel anchored and ready to face the day, even if they're feeling a little wobbly inside.


  1. A Love of Books 📚

Sharing a bedtime story isn't just about reading; it's about vocabulary, imagination, and sequence. A child who loves stories is a child who is ready to learn to read!

At Orchidale, we try and prepare all our children for success at school by doing our best to nurture their natural curiosity and independence. Our dedicated school readiness sessions are led by Shannon, a qualified Early Years Teacher, who focuses on phonics and literacy through play. We empower our preschoolers to take safe risks in our Woodwork Club—where they even use power drills! —and foster responsibility through our Gardening and Rewilding projects. By taking regular Minibus Adventures into the community, we ensure our children are confident, social, and ready to take their next big step.
